Construction – construction waste

The increasing requirement to segregate waste places new demands on building contractors to ensure construction waste is dealt with properly.

Waste Management companies and building contractors are turning to the inland waterways as an efficient and cost effective way of moving waste from construction sites to reprocessing facilities.

Our tugs and barges recently removed all the plasterboard waste from a property development in Kings Cross on the Regent’s canal. The interior lining contractor was obliged to separate out the plasterboard waste from the other waste streams.

In order to do this effectively and save space on site the contractor chipped the plasterboard waste and dropped it via a chute into one of our barges moored alongside the site.

Once a month the barge was moved to Powerday’s reprocessing facility at Old Oak Wharf in Willesden for emptying. This was done over a weekend so that the barge was back in position on site the following Monday morning.

Barging Benefits

Space gain: By using barges the contractor reduced the number of skips needed on site to deal with the different waste streams.

Capacity gain: The cubic capacity of the barge was big enough to only need unloading once a month.
