Dredging Wenlock Basin, Shoreditch, London 21st January 2010

At the end of January our crane barge “Dudley” together with an 8 tonne excavator fitted with a clam shell grab were engaged in a project to dredge part of Wenlock Basin in London to improve the mooring facilities.

The silt was dredged out into a hopper barge moored alongside “Dudley” and then sucked out of the hopper by a waste disposal contractor into tankers for onward disposal by road to a treatment plant near Cambridge. Material that was too solid to suck through the suction unit was transferred directly into tipper lorries from the hopper barge for road transport to Cambridge. About 200 cubic metres of material were removed over a period of 4 to 5 days.

The advantage of using tankers to remove the silt is that it avoids the problem of trying to move a wet slurry type material in open tipper lorries which can normally only take half a load or require some inert material to be mixed with the silt to make is stiff enough to transport safely.
