Welfare Facilities at Danbury St. City Road Lock, Islington, London 15th March 2010

In the middle of March we mobilised three of our welfare pontoons for a contractor carrying out works for British Waterways alongside City Road Lock on the Regents Canal. With ever more demanding health & safety requirements for on-site welfare facilities, the facilities themselves have become more comprehensive and sophisticated.
In order to facilitate these requirements we have a number of canal pontoons that are big enough to take standard 20 by 8 cabins to provide canteens, toilets, mains generators, drying rooms, changing rooms and store room. These cabins can normally be loaded into the pontoons using the lorry mounted hiabs the cabins are delivered with.
Once set up on site the facilities provided are every bit as good as normal site services but based on the canal rather than on land.

Servicing toilets, water tanks, fuel bowsers etc is easily dealt with by moving the pontoon with a tug to a suitable access point for re-filling and servicing. Once serviced the welfare pontoon can be moved back to site ready for operation again.
