Towpath Improvements in Harlow on the River Stort 12th November 2010

Starting in October our narrow bantam pusher tug “Wigan” and dumb barge “Jim IV” with 6 tonne hiab together with our small plant pontoon “Hampton 1” and small pusher tug “Stanley” have been supplying materials to a contractor involved with the towpath improvements works on the River Stort in Harlow.

The work involves re-laying the towpath surface and installing sections of river bank protection. “Wigan” and “Jim IV” have been delivering aggregate to the contractors re-laying the towpath and “Stanley” and “Hampton 1” with a 5 tonne excavator on board have been delivering bank protection materials and installing posts along the river bank edge as part of the bank protection works.

The picture below shows the bank protection posts being placed in the river from our small steel punt “Hook” and installed into the river bank with the 5 tonne excavator in “Hampton 1”.

The River Stort presents some operational challenges as the locks are less than 14’ wide and the bridges are quite low requiring “Wigan” to operate with her wheelhouse in its “lowered” position.
