In the first few months of 2013 a
contractor working for Canal & River Trust started to strengthen
Parkin Lane Bridge in Apperley Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal
by inserting new steel beams underneath the existing bridge.
WHH Ltd supplied one flat top pontoon
together with two open pontoons, a mini tug ‘Stanley’ and our crane
barge ‘Dudley’ with a 30 tonne hiab for lifting the new steel beams.
The 30 tonne hiab in Dudley could lift a 4 tonne beam at a reach of
The contractor erected cradles on the
pontoons with scissor jacks on top in order to fine tune the
positioning of the beams. Using the hiab in Dudley the bridge beams,
which came in 3 sections, were lifted section by section onto the
cradles on the pontoons, floated under the bridge and jacked up into
The 3 beam sections were then bolted
together to make one complete beam across the bridge. A total of 3
new beams were installed.
